'GRANITE FIASCO MUST NOT BE REPEATED' - COUNCIL CALL FOR LOCAL STONE TO BE USED IN FUTURE PROJECTS2.09.00pm GMT Wed 5th Nov 2008
After the furore over the Chinese granite in St George's Square, Lindley Lib Dem Councillor Christine Stanfield is urging Kirklees Council to use more appropriate materials in the future. The Lindley Ward Councillor- who has repeatedly raised residents concerns over the choice of Chinese granite in St George's Square - has submitted a motion for debate in Council on the 12th November. She wants the Conservative Cabinet to learn from mistakes made over the choice of imported stone and to undertake to use local materials, including local stone from now on. Cllr Stanfield says: "We need to make sure the granite fiasco is not repeated" "There are a number of other big regeneration schemes on the horizon in Huddersfield including Queensgate and the Waterfront, and residents have told me that if stone is to be used, they would like it to be as local as possible and certainly not imported from the other side of the world". "I hope all members will support this motion. Favouring local materials not only supports local jobs and the economy, it cuts carbon emissions and just as important, gives Huddersfield its unique character"
