Cllr Dennis Hullock, Liberal Democrat, Dewsbury East, has passed the comments of residents living in the area of Syke Lane, Earlsheaton to Kirklees Highways Officers ahead of plans being agreed to improve road and pedestrian safety in the area.

Cllr Hullock was first contacted by residents living on and around Syke Lane, Earlsheaton earlier this year after a number of accidents had taken place on the road involving speeding vehicles.

Cllr Hullock says: "Syke Lane is a busy stretch of road and there is a lot of residential housing nearby lived in by families with children, as well as there being quite a few older residents, so when local people approached me about this issue I immediately understood their concerns."

In response to resident's calls for help Cllr Hullock asked Kirklees Highways Service to conduct in investigation into the problem of speeding traffic on Syke Lane which was completed in late July 2005.

Cllr Hullock says: "Highways investigation identified the area outside Syke Ing Mill as being the area where drivers seem most intent on putting their foot down. To tackle the problem, Officers have put forward a number of suggested measures that they believe will encourage to reduce their speed, improving road and pedestrian safety in the area."

Cllr Hullock wrote to residents at the beginning of August 2005 asking for their feeling about Highway's proposals.

Cllr Hullock says: "I have had numerous letters, phone calls and e-mails from residents regarding the proposals. The response has been tremendous. I have also spent a lot of time in the vicinity of Syke Lane speaking to locals and passers-by about the road and what they thought of the proposals. It has been very reassuring to speak to so many concerned and thoughtful local people."

Cllr Hullock has fed all of the residents' responses back to Highways Officers ahead of a final proposal being put together in the near future.

Cllr Hullock says: "I plan to notify residents of what has been agreed as soon as the decision has been made."
