A residents' petition presented to Kirklees Council on Wednesday 18 January 2012 has called for a pedestrian crossing to be installed on Fernside Avenue - a busy road running past two local schools in Almondbury Ward. The Schools in question are Almondbury High School and Greenside Infants.
The petition was organised by local resident Phil Scott in response to concerns raised by parents and staff who had observed the difficulties children were having crossing the road safely during the school run when traffic volumes in the area are at their highest. The petition was signed by 250 local people after circulation among residents and having been made available at the local Children Centre.
Cllr Ann Denham, Lib Dem Councillor for Almondbury Ward, presented the petition to Council on behalf of Phil Scott and the residents. The petition will now be passed to officers for investigation before a report is prepared for Cabinet.
Cllr Denham said:
"The issues children and parents are having crossing the road safely is because of the volume of traffic in the area at peaks times. While the traffic calming slows vehicles as it should, the number of cars moving up and down the road limits opportunities to move across safely. This is clearly a cause for concern for both parents and schools staff. Hopefully the 250 signatures gathered will convince Cabinet that action needs to be taken to improve the situation."
