Cllr Linda Wilkinson (Almondbury Ward Councillor)
Lepton Community Link has arranged a special day of events to mark the grand unveiling of the revamped Lepton Square on Saturday 27th March 2010.
The Square has undergone a major transformation in the last twelve months thanks to a £180k investment through Kirklees Council's Small Centres Improvement Programme.
The Square was included in the scheme after local ward councillors asked that the council transform the square into a safe, refreshing and welcoming place for the local community.
Under the Scheme, the main car park has been reshaped into a circular pattern to better manage traffic movement and maximize the space available. There has also been new landscaping, paving, benches, lighting and improvements to local shop fronts. A new entrance is marked by ornamental trees and an obelisk. The Obelisk was designed by local young people with the help of artists Jan Yates and Bronwyn Morris and paid for by Huddersfield South Area Committee.
To celebrate the official unveiling the Square and to celebrate village life, Lepton Community Link has arranged a day of events on the Saturday 27th March.
The activities will commence at 10am with a walk around Lepton starting and finishing at the Parish Church. Refreshments will be provided at the Church between 11am and 12.30 before Grange Moor Band leads a procession to the Square.
At 13.00 there will be an official opening ceremony involving speeches from Cllr Linda Wilkinson (Almondbury Ward Councillor), Mrs Sarah Brierley (immediate past Chair and founding member of Lepton Community Link) and Dr George Redmond, a local historian who will talk about the origin of the obelisk.
For the remainder of the afternoon, crowds will be entertained by local School choirs, highland dancers, stalls, exhibitions, games, a balloon race and much more.
In the evening, Rowley Lane School will host a Grand Ceilidh with food, music and bar. The music will be provided by Phlappjax with tickets costing £10 each available from Lepton Post Office and Library or on 01484 306643.
Cllr Linda Wilkinson (Almondbury Ward Councillor) said:
"We are very pleased with the appearance of the new square. It's undergone a real transformation and has become a much brighter and friendlier place. A lot of the changes have been really well received with lots of positive comments coming from local people and businesses. We hope that everyone will come to the Spring Fling on the 27th March to celebrate the official opening with us. A big thanks has to go to the people at Lepton Link for pulling the events programme together, to the various council services and everyone else involved in delivering the scheme, they've done an excellent job."
Marjorie Beaumont (Current Chair of Lepton Community Link) Said:
"We feel that the square is greatly improved and will encourage people to play a larger part in life of the local community. Very favourable remarks about the new Square have been received. Lepton Community Link has been highly involved in the transformation of the Square and the organisation and programme for Lepton Spring Fling. Our aim is to continue improving Lepton for its residents. We do hope that many people will join us on March 27th for a Fun Day out.
