LEEDS ROAD TO GET INDOOR CROWN GREEN BOWLING FACILITY

Keen Huddersfield bowlers will soon be able to take part in their favourite pastime all year round, in all weathers, after the council's Cabinet agreed to create an indoor crown Green bowling venue on Leeds Road.

The concept of creating the bowling facility on Leeds Road was initiated by the Lib Deb Group on Kirklees Council as part of a previous year's rollover agreement.

The Council's Cabinet agreed to continue with the Lib Dem plan at it's Cabinet meeting on Tuesday this week.

Existing bowling greens on Leeds Road will now have covering structures built over them so that bowlers can keep on playing through the autumn and winter in all weathers.

Lib Dem Regeneration Spokesperson Cllr John Smithson said:

"We are very pleased that the Labour Administration has decided to continue with this Lib Dem proposal. Crown Green Bowling continues to be popular pastime, increasingly among young people who are members of clubs all over the borough. Setting up an indoor facility will provide them with a greater opportunity to hone their skills whilst opening up Huddersfield as a possible venue for bowling tournaments throughout the year."

The original Lib Dem proposal also asked that a further facility be set up in Dewsbury. However, Kirklees Labour Group that runs the Cabinet decided that this idea would be dropped. Cllr Smithson is very disappointed by the Labour Administrations decision to not follow through on the proposal in full.

Cllr Smithson said: "I understand that Dewsbury is a corporate priority for the council under the Labour Group, but here they've missed the chance to give something new to Dewsbury. Dewsbury loses out again it seems."
