A councillor's bright idea is to result in three well used Lindley Footpaths becoming the first in the UK to have lighting triggered by people's movements.
Cllr Christine Stanfield - the Lindley Lib Dem - came up with the idea which she thought would help to reduce power consumption, saving cash for the council, whilst also reducing the council's carbon footprint and lessening light pollution.
The council is now preparing to install the motion sensitive devices - a national first - on the following footpaths before Christmas:
ï'§ Plover Road to West Street at Fieldtops
ï'§ Goldington Avenue to New Hey Road across Goldington Rec
ï'§ New Hey Road to Willwood Avenue in Oakes
Cllr Stanfield said:
"This is a very simple idea and system, similar to one that we have in lots of offices and public buildings across the council already".
"Basically, when someone comes along wanting to use the path the movement sensor will switch on the light. And when they have moved into a new section of the path and triggered the next light, the previous light will be switched off behind them. A light will never go out until the next one has been triggered so there is no risk of someone being plunged into complete darkness."
"This system will save the council money and help reduce carbon omissions."
"It will be a feather in the cap for Lindley to be the first place nationally to run with such an idea and I would not be surprised if authorities up and down the whole of the UK pick up on it as a way to cut back on waste."
As part of the work brand new LED lighting will also be introduced on the footpaths with white light as opposed to yellow which is brighter and better for public safety.
