Kirklees council has exchanged contracts with a developer for the demolition of the existing derelict site at Greenacres in Huddersfield Rd and the building of a state of the art 64 bed unit. It will include special facilities for older people with dementia. The new unit with be run by Orchard Care Homes.
It is expected that demolition will begin in June and the unit should be up and running by next summer.
Holme Valley North Lib Dem councillor David Woodhead, who has campaigned for the new unit, said
'I am pleased that the planning and security issues have now been resolved and that work will start soon. There is a growing need for this type of facility, especially in the Valleys. It will not only provide excellent accommodation for local people but also provide jobs both in the construction and in operation'
The development is part of a package of measures across the borough with similar homes being provided at Ashworth Court and Lydgate House and the already constructed unit in Netherton.
