Children from Lepton Schools and Youth Club are to be given the task of designing a feature that will mark the entrance to "The Square" in the centre of Lepton (off Highgate Lane) once revamp works are completed in mid August this year.
Cllr Linda Wilkinson (Lib Dem Member for Almondbury Ward)
Work is planned to start at "The Square" in June to transform the village shopping centre into a place which is refreshed and welcoming for local people. It is hoped that the work will brighten the area and reinforce its function as an effective village centre. It is currently home to the local doctors, post office and local shops, Methodist Church and Scout Hut.
Huddersfield South Area Committee approved the funding for the youth designed entrance feature at its meeting this week (21/4) along with money to cover cost of planting trees to complement the finished entrance feature.
Cllr Linda Wilkinson (Lib Dem Member for Almondbury Ward) said:
"The revamp of the square will mark a new beginning for the village centre and the businesses and community facilities that are based there. It has needed investment for sometime and the plans we have supported should deliver the boost that is required. We wanted young people to feel part of the changes and have some ownership of The Square. Having them design the entrance feature seemed a nice way to get them involved. We are really looking forward to seeing what ideas they come up with and to see them physically taking shape. We will certainly arrange for an unveiling ceremony when the time comes".
