£9000 is to be spent improving three public footpaths in Meltham. Home Valley North Area Committee approved the spending at its meeting on Tuesday 20 January 2009.
£9000 is to be spent improving three public footpaths in Meltham.
The investment represents Holme Valley North Ward's share of a £207,000 windfall for Kirklees footpaths agreed by council in June 2008 from rollover funds available from the previous financial year.
Three footpaths - the combined lengths of which total 165 metres - will now all have works carried out during this financial year to improve their surfaces. These include:
• Footpath 44 - running from Calmlands Road to Heather Road
• Footpath 45 - the section between Wessenden Head Road to Calmlands Road
• Footpath 33 - on the pleasure grounds on Holmfirth Road
Cllr David Woodhead (Lib Dem member for Holme Valley North Ward) said:
"I am very pleased that our programme of footpath improvements is carrying on and expanding. Footpaths are not only good for recreation and tourism, they provide important local links to help people to get about the area, including to the shops and schools. I think everyone would prefer to have fewer cars on the road, whether it's for safety reasons or to help tackle climate change. Providing a well maintained and accessible footpaths network is one way to help achieve this goal."
The investment will help the council contribute to the achievement of its green and healthy living agendas in addition to targets in the West Yorkshire transport plan.
