A challenge to see which of Lindley's Youth Group could create the best and most interesting Christmas tree out of nothing but recycled materials has been decided.

Lindley Youth Group, "HD3", issued the festive eco-challenge to other youth groups in the Lindley area in October 2008 with the only restriction being that nothing could be bought new. Green Party Councillor Julie Stewart Turner took responsibility for judging the entries of the five finalists last week.

Outright winners were Oakes Baptist Friday Night Club (FNC) with a brilliant creation of a broom handle, wire coat hangers, recycled ivy and lovely angels made from old cards (1). Joint Second were "STYG!" - (St Stephens Youth Group) with an old artificial tree beautifully decorated with clever and imaginative decorations - and the 3rd Huddersfield Brownies with an alternative tree with bare branches, dressed with old and decorated CDs and interesting cut outs.

An individual prize for brilliance went to the 3rd Huddersfield Guides for a Christmas tree in a recycled bottle!

A runners up prize went to HD3 the Lindley Youth Club whose recycled tree was colourful and ingenious.

Cllr Christine Stanfield Lib Dem Councillor for Lindley, said

"I was privileged to watch the judging taking place and I am really proud of all the effort and imagination on display from the young people of Lindley. There is so much creativity and enthusiasm and it was lovely to see so many interesting and colourful and imaginative interpretations of our traditional Christmas decoration. I am really looking forward to the Prize giving by Deputy Mayor Cllr Julie Steward-Turner on Friday 9th January at the Oakes Baptist Chapel"
