Young people in Kirklees will soon be able to access leisure and recreation activities as well as other types of young person support from mobile units thanks to a £200,000 investment.
As part of the 2008/09 budget, the Liberal Democrat Council Group proposed that money be spent providing services for young people in areas where they currently have no established centre for young people or young person's provision. Kirklees Cabinet approved the spending on Wednesday 26th November.
Three mobile units will now soon be operating in different rural and urban locations across the borough manned by teams of council outreach workers, assistant youth workers, recreation staff and drivers.
From the units young people will be able to
• access recreational and leisure activities including sports and arts
• receive information, guidance and advice
• learn about what other young person's resources their locality has to offer
• engage with voice and influence opportunities including the UK Youth Parliament
• gain access to a range of accreditation opportunities
• participate in the support of youth outreach work in their area
Cllr Kath Pinnock (Lib Dem Spokesperson on Young People's Services) said:
"Young people across the borough deserve equal access to services and resources targeted specifically at them and their needs."
"The money that we have secured for the funding of the outreach teams will bridge a gap in services and make certain all young people have the chance to get involved in activities outside of school".
"This is much needed addition to the range of young person's services the council offers and I am very happy that the Cabinet has signed off on our proposals."
