Cllr. Naz Hussain
Residents living on Stockhill Street in Westborough are to submit a petition to Kirklees Council opposing plans to build a brand new academy for 1,650 young people on their doorstep.
Stockhill Street is the already congested one-way street that serves Westborough High School, one the secondary Schools in Kirklees which the Council's Conservative Cabinet is planning to replace under their controversial Brighter Futures Programme.
The Residents are concerned that the Conservative Cabinet's plans to increase the number on role at the new facility by 78% will lead to traffic chaos.
Cllrs Karam Hussain and Naz Hussain, the Liberal Democrat members in Dewsbury West Ward, are to present the petition at the meeting of Kirklees Council on Wednesday 12th November.
Cllr Karam Hussain says:
"The people and families living on Stockhill Street are very concerned by the Conservative Cabinet's proposals. The road here is small and already very badly congested. Increasing the number of pupils attending from 925 to 1650 will clearly make the situation worse and more dangerous than it already is".
Cllr Naz Hussain says:
"An increase in numbers at the school will lead to an increase in traffic on the street; you don't need to be a town planner to recognise that the residents have a point. Hopefully the Cabinet will sit up and pay attention. The decisions the council is making now will have an impact on the area for year's to come so they have to ensure that they have the support of the community".
