Cllr Kath Pinnock has warned the Cabinet that it is now vital that they work with others to draw up workable plans for schools in North Kirklees.
Following the Cabinet's decision to invite input on the school proposals, Cllr Pinnock said "It is good news that the Conservative Cabinet has finally accepted that their plans are inadequate. I welcome the prospect of cross-group talks on this issue.
"The Lib Dem group tried very hard to persuade the Conservative Cabinet that there needed to be a sixth form in Dewsbury, but Cllr Dodds and Cllr Light refused to listen. We spent a year talking to the Conservatives about schools but they were fixed on forcing Sixth form students to travel to Mirfield and building a new school in Cllr Light's ward. It is a real shame that they refused to listen to reason until residents were forced to take to the streets. A great deal of stress and upset could have been avoided if only the cabinet had been willing to work with others.
"It is now vital that the Conservative group accept that they need to get agreement across all parties on the council. This is the biggest single decision Kirklees Council has been faced with. The decision has to be made by the full council and not by six Conservative Councillors. The long overdue all-party talks will only be meaningful if the Conservatives accept the majority view of Council."
