2 hours of the price of 1 parking scheme to continue.
A two hours for the price of one shoppers' parking scheme that has been in operation in Dewsbury Town Centre for the past twelve months has been given the green light to continue.
Under the scheme, shoppers using car parks at Whitehall Way, Wakefield Old Road, Crackenedge Lane, Cliffe Street and South Street on non-market days have benefited from a reduced tariff giving them the first two hours parking for the price of one.
The aim of the scheme was to to boost the number of shoppers in the town centre on non market days. A "slight" increase of £10,000 was reported to the council's cabinet meeting on Wednesday 30th July when Members approved plans to allow the scheme to continue until December 2009.
Cllr Naz Hussain, Lib Dem Member in Dewsbury West, has welcomed the news:
"It is very important that the council keeps on trying to find ways to bring more shoppers into the town centre."
"I naturally welcome the continuation of this scheme but press the cabinet to try and find further ways to boost town centre trade in Dewsbury".
"Clearly the £10,000 increase in parking fees collected is a start but I feel much more could be done. The council could extend the 2-for-1 to market days as well on a trial basis to try and give things a bit of a boost. I am certain the traders would appreciate the help".
