A speedy decision on whether Kirklees Council will support threatened post offices is required, according to Lib Dem Councillors. The Lib Dem Group on the Council have asked for information about whether the council could follow the example of Essex County Council who have pledged to provide council funding to keep post offices open.
Locally, ten branch closures were announced across Batley & Spen and Dewsbury constituencies in May. Further cuts are expected when post office plans are announced for Colne Valley and Huddersfield constituencies in August.
The Lib Dem Group has submitted a motion to Council calling for an urgent report to be written and a Cabinet decision to be made on whether to pursue the Essex model. The motion will be debated and decided next week at a meeting of Full Council (23rd July).
Cllr Nicola Turner (Lib Dem, Colne Valley Ward) said:
"Sadly we are expecting more closures to be announced in the Huddersfield and Colne Valley areas in August. I think it is really important that the Council acts quickly to see if they can save these post offices.
"I am really disappointed that the government is closing post offices without thinking about the people in our communities who rely on their services. If the council is able to help keep some branches open I think we need to move quickly. We need to hit the ground running when the next wave of closure plans is announced in August."
