Cleckheaton's war memorial will soon be restored to its former glory, in time for planned Remembrance Day ceremonies in November.
Councillor Andrew Pinnock (Lib Dem, Cleckheaton Ward) has been working to get the memorial cleaned up for many years. The Spen Valley Area Committee has agreed to pay for the cleaning of the stone work, walls and plaques. The investment will also pay for bits of lettering that have been worn away by the elements to be re-cut. The Royal British Legion has its consent to the plans.
Cllr Andrew Pinnock said
"We've been promised by Kirklees that the work on our war memorial will be done in time for Remembrance Day. This should see it restored to its best in time for the ceremony.
"We have been improving the memorial in stages for some time now. We had new iron railings put in and then the new parade area was created. This next piece of work will almost finish the job off, all there will be left to do is to put up some railing to protect the monument itself. This should also be completed by the end of the summer""
"I am really looking forward to seeing the completed project and hope local people feel proud of Cleckheaton's past when they see the memorial."
