Additional £150k green investment could make plastic bag free dream come true.
£150k of extra funding for green projects could be used to make Kirklees a plastic bag free district, if local Lib Dem Councillors get their way. The Lib Dem Group proposed extra green investment at this year's budget meeting. Now a report to the Council's Cabinet suggests some of the money could be used to take the bag-free plans to the next level.
Other schemes under consideration include giving can crushers to residents, increasing the types of plastics which can be collected through the doorstep collection and putting recycling facilities in Huddersfield town centre.
Cllr Ann Denham, who is leading the calls for Kirklees to 'bin the bags' said "We were very pleased in February that the Council agreed to increase investment in green schemes like my drive to scrap plastic bags. Residents across Kirklees tell me that tackling climate change is a top priority for them. As a result of extra money put in by the Lib Dems we have a big chance to make Kirklees a much greener place.
"I will be pushing hard to make sure that the Council focuses on positive steps to tackle climate change, waste and environmental damage.
"I urge the Cabinet to back the Lib Dem plans to tackle climate change."
