£705,000 is about to invested in major road and pavement reconstructions works on part of the B6107 which links Marsden and Meltham. Cllrs Nicola Turner and Margaret Fearnley (Lib Dems, Colne Valley Ward) are delighted by the news of the investment. The Council's Cabinet are set to sign off the much needed improvement works at the council's cabinet meeting on Wednesday 9th.
Cllrs Turner said: "This is excellent news for the Colne Valley and it's about time. This section of the B6107 is in a dreadful state and is clearly in the need of improvement. A lot of money has been spent on the major roads in Kirklees this last year at the cost of residential streets and B and C roads like this one. These roads make up an essential part of our transport network and often put up with a great deal more punishment than the major roads."
Cllr Turner went to raise concerns regarding the potential for greater speeds on the road following the improvement works.
Cllr Fearnley agreed with Cllr Turners comments regarding road safety adding: "The potential for drivers to drive faster is a concern but dodging potholes can also be dangerous and we need to ensure that our roads are fit for purpose. We have raised our concerns with the relevant officers and the Road Safety Team have been brought in to see if anything will need to be done".
Work on the B6107 will take place between April and August 2008.. The full stretch of the road will only be closed for 3 weeks during the school holiday period during which time HGV's will need to divert via Huddersfield Ring Road.
Cllr Fearnley concluded "Residents who would like further information about the proposed works can contact us via Kirklees Members Services on 01484 221801 or at libdem.office@kirklees.gov.uk."
