The government is still dragging its heels over banning plastic bags, according to Cllr Ann Denham (Kirklees Lib Dem Spokesperson on the Environment). Councillor Denham is calling on the government to act quickly to ban the bags, and introduce legislation to protect our environment.
Reacting to the announcement that the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Alistair Darling, will again threaten to introduce legislation to ban plastic bags, but only if voluntary action is not successful, Cllr Denham (Almondbury Ward) said: "Yet again the government is refusing to seize control of this issue and pass legislation banning plastic bags. Other countries, including Ireland and France, are way ahead of the UK in this area. Locally I am working hard to make Kirklees a plastic bag-free district. We could make that happen very quickly if the government supported us and put the environment ahead of the interests of big companies.
"I want to urge the Chancellor and Prime Minister to be bolder - let's get a ban in place as soon as possible and start work on cutting the billions of bags currently used every year."
Cllr Denham secured Council support for her calls to work towards making Kirklees the first plastic bag free district ion the country, and is now working to take the idea forward.
