Councillor Ann Denham (Lib Dem, Almondbury ward) is delighted that Kirklees Councillors supported her call to reduce plastic bags used in the local area.
At a meeting of full council, Councillors voted in support of the Lib Dem motion which urged the government to introduce a levy on plastic bags and instructed the council to start work to make Kirklees a bag-free zone.
Councillor Ann Denham said: "Plastic bags are really damaging to the environment. I am pleased councillors supported my call this time to work towards making Kirklees a bag-free zone. I did try to get support for this idea two years ago, but the Conservatives refused to back me. I am pleased I didn't give up!
"Now we can get to work with residents and local businesses to find a way to make our area more environmentally friendly and cut the 100 million bags used every year in Kirklees."
