Bull baiting was a blood-sport that was extremely popular in England up until Victorian times.
Councillor Ann Denham (Lib Dem, Almondbury ward) is appealing to local residents for information of an antiquarian nature. Bull baiting was a blood-sport that was extremely popular in England up until Victorian times.
The sport involved a bull being tied up in a ring and wild dogs being set upon it until it was completely immobilised. A gruesome sport, it was banned in England in the 1830's. The last Bull baiting, in Kirklees, is said to have taken place in 1824.
Councillor Ann Denham said: "There is no doubting the barbarous nature of this sport but it is a part of our history. I am appealing to local residents who might remember a sign prohibiting Bull baiting on Almondbury common."
This sign is no longer around however, the post remains. It is the aim of the Almondbury Lumb Civic Associate to re-erect the sign in order to preserve the local historical significance of this sign.
"Any information as to what was written on this sign would be extremely helpful" says Cllr Denham. "
