- Lib Dem Amendment will encourage reduction in carbon emissions
Lib Dem Councillors are delighted that planning application fees attached to the installation of renewable energy sources - such as mini wind turbines or solar panels - in private houses and community buildings will be waived by the council from now on.
The group tabled an amendment to this year's council budget at its annual budget meeting on Wednesday meaning that £55,000 will be provided over the next four years to support the change
The Tory Group that currently runs the council agreed the amendment at the meeting.
"It is our view that people in Kirklees should be encouraged to install methods of generating renewable energy in their own homes. This could include installing, for example, a mini wind turbine, solar panels or heat pumps. All of these adaptations would contribute to efforts locally and nationwide to reduce carbon emissions and tackle climate change" says Cllr Marie Bower. "Waving these typically paltry fees will be an added incentive for local people to take on the green challenge and do something themselves" Cllr Bower concludes.
