"The main concerns raised included things like speeding, rat running, on street parking and parking at junctions."
Cllr Dennis Hullock (Lib Dem, Dewsbury East) has called on Kirklees Council to investigate road safety on two residential roads (Sugar Lane and Old Bank Road) in Earlsheaton following the completion of a survey of local people.
"The local highways - and roads safety in particular - are among my top priorities" says Cllr Hullock "I've been doing extensive work in the ward over the past six month consulting with local people and this survey looking at Sugar Lane and Old Bank is a further part of this" (1)
"82% of the households that took part said that roads safety was an issue for them"
"The main concerns raised included things like speeding, rat running, on street parking and parking at junctions."
"Residents also identified important issue at the hill top bend on Sugar Lane"
"Apparently, drivers are cutting the bend when going down the hill while on street parking is forcing people who are coming from the opposite direction into the centre of the road. Local people are predicting a head on collision and I would think they are probably correct."
"Local people are really in tune with the places that they live and can often pick out a problem that a highways official might miss either because they're not there at the right time of day or circumstances don't reveal it while they are in the area".
Cllr Hullock has forwarded the results of his survey to the Assistant Director of Kirklees Highways Service, explaining residents' concerns and asking for the council to investigate and come up with their proposals for the road.
"As soon as I have the council's response, I will be speaking with local people again to let them know what the council has said. Residents will know what will work best in their area and I will ensure that they are asked for their views."
