? 78% of the households that took part backed the installation of a speed plateau at the junction of Bennett Lane, Grasmere Road and Langdale Road.
A consultation lead by Cllr Dennis Hullock (Lib Dem, Dewsbury East Ward) has resulted in over 100 residents throwing their support behind two ideas they believe would help to improve road safety on Bennett Lane in Dewsbury East.
? 170 households chose to respond to the survey which has been run in three phases by Cllr Hullock between January and February 2006.
? 78% of the households that took part backed the installation of a speed plateau at the junction of Bennett Lane, Grasmere Road and Langdale Road.
? 57% percent also called for traffic lights and better crossing facilities at the junction with Leeds Road.
And Cllr Hullock is not only delighted by the residents' response to the ideas for changing the road but by the enthusiasm that local people have shown for "having their say" on what should happen in their local area.
"I have been doing a series of consultations on the highways over the past six months" says Cllr Hullock "And the response, well, it's just been quite incredible."
"I've literally had hundreds of response forms back to almost everything I've been doing and it really shows people are engaged with their local area and want to influence what happens there."
"I ran an initial survey back in the summer of 2006 focusing on Bennet Lane and, among other things, issues of speeding and problems at the junction were raised by residents".
"The solutions proposed in the consultation try to resolve the problems the residents themselves have identified. In feel this is why people have participated with such enthusiasm and in such large number. I'm dealing with the problems they feel are important and asking them what they think should be done."
Cllr Hullock has informed highways chiefs of residents' views on what they want to happen and is currently awaiting their reply.
He is also going to present petitions backing both proposals at the meeting of Huddersfield Metropolitan Borough Council next Wednesday (21st March 2007).
