- Call for action over untreated footpaths at Slaithwaite swimming pool following weekend's cold snap
Cllr Margaret Fearnley (Lib Dem, Colne Valley Ward) is calling on Kirklees Council to act to ensure untreated footpaths at Slaithwaite Swimming Baths are gritted in future after receiving reports of early morning swimmers struggling to keep upright during this weekend's cold snap.
"On Sunday and Monday mornings local people trying to access the swimming pool along the pathway ended up clinging on to the fencing to stay upright" says Cllr Margaret Fearnley "I think the council is quite lucky no one was injured."
The pathway in question runs from the car park to the area in front of the swimming pool entrance.
"The pool is regularly used, especially by older residents early in the morning. The council needs to make sure that all access points are safe in all conditions, particularly when the temperature drops below zero. The wintry snap was forecast well in advance and the management should have had measures in place."
"I have contacted the council drawing their attention to what has happened at the weekend and asking them to supply a grit bin at the pool so that staff can grit the pathways when cold weather is on its way. Work on a new pathway was completed on Monday morning, so a grit bin would certainly seem to be needed at the pool now more than ever".
