Residents living on and around Moorbottom and Moorside in Cleckheaton have made calls for speed cameras to be introduced to slow down dangerous drivers.
The call for action comes in response to a survey circulated by Cllr Andrew Pinnock (Lib Dem, Cleckheaton Ward) after residents approached him with fears about pedestrian safety.
"It is clear people are very worried at the moment" says Cllr Andrew Pinnock "I circulated surveys to just over two hundred households and almost 50% chose to take part which clearly demonstrates the level of concern".
"Elderly residents say they are finding crossing the road from Fox Street increasingly daunting."
"The entrance to St Luke's School is also at the bottom of the road; so there are plenty of children and parents milling about on a regular basis".
"A car actually mounted the pavement and hit a wall last year. Fortunately, it happened on a weekend evening so it was quiet at the time".
The survey sent to residents set out four specific options for dealing with the speeding issue:
(1) Introduction of stationary speed cameras
(2) Regular use of mobile speed cameras
(3) Reducing the width of the road with white lines
(4) Reducing the width of the road by building out the pavements
People were also asked for their own ideas on how the situation could be improved.
• The overwhelming majority (74 respondents - 67%) were in favour of stationary speed cameras being introduced.
• A further 25 people (23%) were in favour of mobile cameras being regularly used to monitor the speed of traffic.
"People clearly want something done" adds Cllr Pinnock "Highways have promised action but what the exact proposals are I do not know yet. What is clear to me is the real determination of local people to see a positive change".
"As soon as I get wind of what is being proposed, I will be in touch with residents again to get their view".
