The Lib Dem Group in Kirklees has negotiated a solution to the fraught issue concerning the 3 day care nurseries in Huddersfield.
Cllr John Smithson (Lib Dem Deputy Leader) says: "Instead of political posturing, we have analysed the position sensibly and tabled a practical solution which the current administration has agreed with".
"We are pleased that the council's current administration has recognised the importance and sensitivity of this issue and has agreed to review the new Children's Centre Programme. This review will seek to ensure that the 3 nurseries are embraced within the programme so that the existing provision can be maintained".
"We are concerned by the failure of ward councillors in Ashbrow and Greenhead to do anything positive about the problem".
"The obvious way to resolve the matter was to make sure that the new children's centre programme embraced the nurseries and this is what we have achieved. I don't understand why the Ashbrow councillors didn't negotiate for a children's centre to be set up in the Deighton Centre where Tiddlywinks is currently based? This seemed obvious to us as group and we sought to achieve it on behalf of worried parents"
"We are pleased that the Tories have agreed to our proposals and are confident that the review of the new children's centres programme will ensure that the existing provision can be maintained."
"We are confident that this process will result in a satisfactory outcome for all" Cllr Smithson concludes.
As part of the review, the Administration has also agreed to holding effective consultation with the everyone concerned, including parents and staff.
