CALLS FOR TOWN HALL STAFF TO MAKE SURE FLAG IS FLOWN ON ST GEORGE'S DAY
Cllr Dennis Hullock (Lib Dem, Dewsbury East) and Cllr Naz Hussain (Lib Dem, Dewsbury West) are calling on (Dewsbury) Town Hall staff to make sure that the St George's flag is flown on St Georges Day (April 23rd) if the council fails to get the broken flag pole at the town hall replaced by the patron saint's day next month.
"The flag pole on the town hall came down in strong winds about two weeks ago now" says Cllr Dennis Hullock "and the council are saying that there'll be no flags flying outside Dewsbury Town Hall until they can be sure that there is no risk to public safety. This could mean no St George's Cross on patron saints day".
"The acyclic pole which came down was only relatively new" adds Cllr Naz Hussain "It was put in a couple of year ago because the council wanted something that could be relied upon to stand up to strong winds. I suppose it's a bit ironic really."
"Safety checks are taking place at other sites where the same pole is used. Only when the council is confident that the existing poles are up to the job or a reliable replacement can be found will the flags go back up". Cllr Naz Hussain Adds.
Both councillors urged Dewsbury Town Hall Staff - and any other town hall staff affected - to ensure that they take steps to make sure the St Georges Cross is flown in some form come patron saints day in April if the situation hasn't changed.
"Possibly flags could be flown from windows or links of smaller flags hung to decorate the front of the building. It's up to staff to be imaginative and resourceful to help celebrate the occasion" the councillors conclude.
