ECO AWARENESS CONCERNS

January 3, 2007 7:09 PM
  • Tories downgrade "raising environmental awareness"s in new vision statement

Councillor Ann Denham (Lib Dem spokesperson for the Environment) is concerned that the Tory Administration's failure to include "raising environmental awareness" as one of its key aims in the council's new Environmental Vision Statement (1) could jeopardise the visions overall chances of success.

The new stripped down vision statement (which was approved at this Wednesday's Cabinet meeting) has dropped "Raising Environmental Awareness" as a key aim (2).

This has left just 3 - (i) Reducing greenhouse gases (ii) Raising Environmental Standards of Buildings (iii) Developing Green networks.

"If the council is actually going to achieve its environmental vision and successfully tackle issues such as climate change and the local environment then this will involve changing some local people's attitudes and lifestyles" says Cllr Denham "This is where raising awareness becomes crucial".

"A lot of people understand that every individual has a part to play in improving and protecting the place where we live, but others are more difficult to get through to. Nevertheless, the person who visits Castle Hill to enjoy the view, but leaves their litter behind, needs to begin to recognise the impact their behaviour is having".

"The vision recognises that, to succeed, it must engage with local people about these matters."

"So, to relegate increasing people's awareness to a footnote in the vision doesn't recognise fully or clearly the very important role it has to play"

"I would urge that very specific arrangements to raise people's awareness are set out in the action plan that will be used to deliver the vision" Cllr Denham concluded.

1) The environment vision is one of the key strategic documents which comprise the council's corporate policy framework.
