Cllr John Smithson (Lib Dem, Almondbury Ward)
Cllr John Smithson (Lib Dem, Almondbury Ward) is relieved that Kirklees has finally decided to take steps to repair Lascelles Hall Road in Lepton.
"Common sense has finally won out" says Cllr Smithson "Kirklees has heeded my calls to repair now and apportion responsibility later. It was the only way forward for the council unless it was going to subject local residents to further months of inconvenience".
A 100 year old wall on Lascelles Hall Road collapsed on Monday 7th August 2006 (1). Since then, there has been a dispute over who is responsible for the wall collapsing.
Kirklees decision comes three weeks after Almondbury Ward councillors presented a petition, organised by local residents, to the meeting of Kirklees Council (Wed 29th November 2006) calling for the road to repaired (2).
"I am satisfied with the council's response to the petition" says Cllr Smithson "But like local people, I am frustrated by their delay in taking action. It is now nearly five months since the one way restrictions were put in place and residents have had to go round the houses to access their properties. There has also been a serious risk of an accident taking place with some drivers ignoring the one way restrictions and going up the road anyway".
Lascelles Hall Road (from its junction with Wakefield Road to Lower Hall Road) will now be closed from January 22nd 2007 for approximately 7 weeks while the work takes place.
