The Tory Administration is going to set parking charges for the whole of Kirklees this afternoon, having deferred the item from the meeting on the 6th December 2006.
In Huddersfield, people have been unhappy at planned increases for shoppers and commuters as well as the introduction of Sunday tariffs for the first time (1).
TORIES FAIL TO KEEP PARKING PROMISE
In Dewsbury, the major disappointment has been the Tory Administration's failure to reduce or abolish charges in shoppers' car parks as they promised to do before taking control of the council last May (2).
"Before last May, the Tories promised to reduce or even abolish parking charges for shoppers in Dewsbury to support town centre businesses" says Cllr Hullock (Lib Dem, Dewsbury East) "Now they are in charge, they have completely forgotten this promise and left the parking charges untouched. The people of Dewsbury have a right to feel let down by the new administration for making a promise they clearly had no intention of keeping".
"This U-turn is very disappointing" says Cllr Naz Hussain (Lib Dem, Dewsbury West) "I am sure that the majority of pensioners in Dewsbury would prefer for parking charge to be abolished in the town centre rather than having 60p a week back on their council tax! It's an insult really, it'll only just pay for 2hrs in Whitehall Way Car park!"
