Almondbury Ward Councillors have allocated Area Committee money to part fund a programme of events aimed at engaging young people and reducing instances of anti social behaviour in the Waterloo Area of Huddersfield (1).

"One of the main complaints from young people in Waterloo is the lack of places for them to go and things for them to do" says Cllr Linda Wilkinson (Portfolio holder for Young People on Huddersfield South Area Committee) "This series of nights, which we are helping to fund, will hopefully change that. It should also help cut down on the number of kids roaming the streets which is one of the major complaints among adult residents".

"The Friday Night Project", which will hopefully hold its first night before the New Year, will take place at Soccer City in Waterloo (7-10/11pm TBC) and will hopefully run for 12 weeks on a trial basis (minimum run of 6 weeks - remaining 6 weeks dependent on funding from Neighbourhood Renewal Fund).

Thus far, although plans are not confirmed, the project is looking to hold film nights, pool and 5 a side football competitions, a "pamper night", possibly with manicures and expert help, as well as some sort of music event.

Youth workers from the relevant agencies will staff the events with support from the Neighbourhood Policing Teams.

"The Friday Night Project looks like a cost effective way of engaging young people in things they enjoy. If it proves a success it could easily be repeated in other ward areas" concluded Cllr Wilkinson.
