Tory Reveals True Colours - its cash before care in Ashworth Court Row
Cllr Dennis Hullock (Lib Dem, Dewsbury East) is appalled by the statement made by the Kirklees Portfolio holder for Social Services (Margaret Bates's) in the Examiner on 6.12.06 (p10) (2) to the effect she has determined to put money before people in her decision to sell of the Ashworth Court Residential Care Home to the private sector.
"She has stated quite clearly that finances are far more important than proper, affordable care for older people" says Cllr Hullock "I am both shocked and appalled."
"We budgeted for the costs of building and running a brand new state of the art residential care home for older people with mental illnesses on the Ashworth Court site so there is absolutely no excuse for reversing the decision and flogging off the land in such a blatant and uncaring manner to save the council cash"
The Tories had promised to keep the existing care facility open if they took control of the council in May last year.
"Cllr Bates has also ignored the wide and thorough consultation we had with both older people and their families on these proposals."
"A council run establishment was the preferred option for the majority as people felt the standard of care could be relied upon."
"Older people, especially those who have a progressive and debilitating disease such as Alzheimer's, deserve care that provides for their specific needs. Their families also deserve piece of mind at a price they can afford."
"I am certain that the majority of older people would prefer to have an affordable, council run care home in their area rather than 60p back a week on their council tax! It's an insulting amount really, what will 60p pay for these days!"
