- Council Leaders Defer Decision On Parking Increases Following Pressure from Lib Dems
The Tory Administration has bottled out of increasing parking charges at today's Cabinet Meeting, deferring the item until a later date following pressure from the Liberal Democrats.
"We have put pressure on the Tories by highlighting their say one thing, do another attitude since coming into power and may have forced a last minute re-think" said Cllr Dennis Hullock (Lib Dem, Dewsbury East).
"Before last May, the Tory Group said they would reduce or even abolish charges for shoppers in Dewsbury. Now they have taken control, the charges have remained entirely untouched in a blatant u-turn. There have also been huge increases in other areas of the borough".
"I am certain that shoppers and local businesses in Dewsbury and other areas will take great hope from this reprieve but we will all have to wait and see."
"I am certain that local pensioners across Kirklees would prefer to see parking charges maintained or reduced in their shopping centres rather than receiving 60p a week back on their council tax! 60p is an insult really, it won't even pay for am hour in the Kingsgate car park!"
