Two tennis courts in Royds Park are going to get a £10,950 facelift in early 2007
Cllr Ann Raistrick (Lib Dem, Cleckheaton Ward) is delighted that the two tennis courts in Royds Park are going to get a £10,950 facelift in early 2007 when Spen Valley Area Committee approves the spending at its meeting on Tuesday.
"This is excellent news for the local community and the park" said Cllr Raistrick.
Local people who regularly use the courts approached Cllr Raistrick with complaints about their condition a number of months ago.
Since then, Cllr Raistrick has worked with the council's Culture and Leisure Service and the Spen Area Committee to agree a 50/50 contribution to the total costs of brining them back up to standard.
The initial report that went to the committee's meeting in November described the courts as "heavily used", saying that they had "gradually deteriorated through natural usage do their popularity" and were "desperately in need of resurfacing to bring them up to standard".
"It is very important that good quality local sports facilities are provided for local people to use" says Cllr Raistrick "The council does a lot to encourage local people to take care of themselves and their health, but none of that is any good without providing decent facilities locally."
