Sections of dry stone walling have been repaired along a Golcar pathway at a reduced cost to the council thanks to an innovative new regeneration project piloted by the Lib Dem Members on Colne Valley Area Committee.
The regeneration project has seen members of the probation service's unpaid working team repairing sections of dry stone walling on the pathway that runs between Knowl Road to St John's Primary School every Wednesday during September under the supervision of experienced staff.
Cllr Robert Iredale (Transportation Portfolio holder on the Colne Valley Area Committee) said: "I am very excited by the success of this project and would like to give my thanks to the members of the probation service's working team for their efforts".
Cllr Iredale says: "The community had identified this particular path as one they wanted brought back up to standard so that people would use it more. The Area Committee put forward the lump sum required to pay for materials needed to mend the walls (1). The probation service then supplied the labour and the supervisors and then they set about getting the job done".
Colne Valley Area Committee has also committed £6000 to resurface the pathway. Work should be completed before Christmas.
Cllr Iredale says: "It really is a good arrangement for everyone. The community has got a pathway in their local network upgraded. The members of the working party have picked up some new skills and experience. I heard that one worker enjoyed the experience so much they said they wouldn't mind taking it up as a profession, which is very encouraging".
Cllr Iredale concluded: "Colne Valley Area Committee will continue to find new ways of working such as this in order to bring about further positive changes in our community."
