Following pressure from the Liberal Democrats to persuade Kirklees Council to tackle the issue of abandoned properties, officers of the Council are now working on a strategy to tackle empty homes causing a nuisance in Kirklees.
Abandoned Properties
"I am delighted that the Council will be taking action to tackle the 6000 abandoned properties in Kirklees" says Councillor Roger Battye. "These homes attract crime, vandalism and anti-social behaviour which can make the lives of those living nearest to them miserable."
"Clearly the action plan will have to take into account properties of people that are in hospital or who have suffered bereavement. The Council can make them safe and less of a problem to the neighbours but action must be taken where properties have just been abandoned. The Council must do all it can to track down the owners and if it can't, then it must use its powers to bring these properties back into use "says Councillor Battye.
"I am asking officers to make sure that the Council prioritises its action to those proprieties that are causing the most disruption to people lives" says Councillor Battye. "I am also asking that empty commercial properties are also dealt with in a similar manner particularly where there is space above the shop that could be brought back into use as a home."
