Councillors Naz Hussain and Karam Hussain (Liberal Democrats, Dewsbury West Ward) have launcded a petition this week in an attempt to secure a new dental surgery for the people of Ravensthorpe.
Cllr Karam Hussain says: "The North Road Dental surgery closed in December 2005 and this has left the people of Ravensthorpe without a locally based dental practice to which they can turn for dental care and advice. There has been a lot of coverage in the press about the difficulties people are experiencing signing on with an NHS dentist and about the poor condition of young people's teeth in the area. For the people of Ravensthorpe to be deprived of such an essential service at this difficult time clearly puts them at a disadvantage and this needs to be addressed by the PCT as soon as possible".
Cllr Naz Hussain said: "When you go on the North Kirklees PCT website and search for a Dental Surgery in Ravensthorpe, it still comes up saying North Road Dental Surgery which is very frustrating. The second choice dental surgery for someone living in Ravensthorpe, according to the PCT website, is now in Mirfield. For people who have children, are getting on in years or have no transport, it is simply not good enough".
Cllrs Naz Hussain, Karam Hussain and Dental Surgery Activist, Kingsley Hill, will be visiting residents door-to-door over the coming weeks to gather signatures indicating the strength of feeling amongst residents.
Cllrs Naz Hussain and Karam Hussain will present the petition to Kirklees Council when it convenes on Wednesday 5 April 2006.
