Kite flying can once again go ahead on Castle Hill after pressure from Almondbury's Liberal Democrat councillors. In summer 2004, Yorkshire Electricity erected signs warning of the dangers of flying kites on Huddersfield's most famous landmark due to the presence of electrical cables. However, these electrical cables have finally been buried safely underground.
The problems with the cables were first highlighted when kites tangled in power lines caused power cuts in the area on two occasions in 2004. The work carried out by Yorkshire Electricity involved extensive cable diversions to satisfy English Heritage that the landscape around the ancient monument would not be damaged.
Cllr Linda Wilkinson, one of Almondbury's three Liberal Democrat councillors, said, "I am delighted that our pressure and hard work has paid off. Now everyone can enjoy flying their kites in spectacular surroundings without fear of electrocutio
