Ship Ahoy in Lindley!
Local Liberal Democrat Councillors Christine Stanfield and Tony Woodhead of Lindley ward will be dressing up as pirates to present awards to children at Lindley Library on SATURDAY 29TH October 2005. The children are being presented with reading certificates for completing a reading voyage.
"The reading voyage is a great way to encourage children to read books and get involved in their local library." says Councillor Stanfield. "I am delighted that so many young people have taken part in this innovative scheme."
The Reading Voyage is a scheme promoted by Kirklees Council to challenge the children of Kirklees to read during the long summer holiday. When they join the scheme the children received a great Voyage log which folds out into a reading fantasy galleon. The children use the galleon to record the books they choose to read and log their opinions on the way. When they visit the library they can talk to library staff and collect stickers to help complete the galleon's puzzles. The children are rewarded as they participate in the scheme and when they have read all six books they are presented with the certificate and a medal in the form of a doubloon.
"I am really pleased to have been invited to present these wards. The children have worked really hard. I know that the children who joined in found the scheme fun and they looked at books that they probably would not have read otherwise" says Councillor Woodwood.
The Reading Challenge was thrown out to children aged 5-12 years and operate throughout Kirklees Library service points, including mobile halts, from 9 July to 17 September. A specially-created linked summer reading challenge website offers children different ways of getting fun from reading.
