Lib Dems launch petition for cash for vulnerable people

October 20, 2005 3:59 PM

Leader of the Lib Dems in KirkleesLiberal Democrats in Kirklees have launched an on-line petition to lobby the Secretary of State for Health for more cash for vulnerable people in Kirklees. Councillor Kath Pinnock, Leader of the Liberal Democrats says "We believe that our social care services should enable residents to live longer, stay healthy, feel well and be secure. We are working hard by investing in services and providing the money for another four homes for vulnerable older people including two for people suffering from dementia as well as investment in extra care homes."

We are facing an increasing number of people who are living longer, we are providing better support to children in the Council's care and we must invest in our workforce. These are demands that are quite rightly placed on the Council but they are causing us some concern. This widening gap - between the needs of residents and the resources provided to the Council to satisfy those needs - continues to have an impact on services across the Council.

This problem is being faced by Councils across the country. We aim to lobby the government to review the money provided to Councils to look after vulnerable people. Nationally there is an estimated shortfall of £663m to pay for services to adults and £599m to pay for services to children. We are asking people to sign our on-line petition to campaign for cash for vulnerable people."
